I LOVE books (in case you hadn’t noticed). One of my favorite things to do is rearrange my bookcase which at the moment is overflowing and spewing books onto the floor.

Another thing I love is browsing bookshelves and bookcases on the Internet and seeing cool and creative ways in which people organize theirs. I save them in a special folder in my computer, and I’ve recently started sharing them on Pinterest.

KHALEEJESQUE MAGAZINE

I’m sure I’ve mentioned it before, but my colleagues and I decided to launch a print version of our e-zine Khaleejesque.com.

We wanted to explore the visual and graphic aspect of Khaleejesque more, and with print magazines, you’ve got a bigger playground to play in.

Well, we’ve finally published it! An immense load has been lifted off our chests, but at the same time, it has been an extraordinary achievement! We knew deep down we could do it, but right about the middle of it, we were plagued with doubt (and maaaybe some panic attacks)!

We went for a clean, minimal and organized layout, with a strong emphasis on design and color. We hope it embodies all of the positive characteristics of the Arabian Gulf.. and we hope you like it!

We’re holding a small launch event at Mall 360 on Sunday and Monday Feb 5 and 6, 2012.

A beautiful way to store jewelry and other valuables are these lovely Andrea Walsh Faceted Boxes. These handmade boxes are made using fine bone china for the base and topped with a frosted glass lid.

They’re available in Lemon, Rose and Blue lids, but my favorite is the burnished gold box with the white lid. It’s so glamorous!

We celebrated my aunt’s birthday on Friday during our weekly gathering. She’s my dad’s only sister so she’s extra extra special! My cousins got some confetti poppers and brought a cake. It was quite fun – messy, yet fun – and I managed to sneak in Khaleejesque Magazine and call it a double celebration. Did I mention we published our first issue?? Crazy!!

Needless to say, where there is a gathering, there is food. And plenty of it...

I jumped on the iPad bandwagon last year and got an iPad 2. I'm very happy with it, and it comes in really handy especially during weekends when I'm out but still need to get work done, at waiting rooms, or at meetings and quick presentations for clients.

Right now, I'm using the Smart Cover (in black) to protect it, but since I'm using the iPad a lot more for work, I want to get a stylish cover.

A while back, my coworkers and I wanted to go out for lunch so we decided to try a new café, called MILK, near our office. It’s a very small café, but has an amazing design and a nice selection of food to choose from. I highly recommend their milk hot chocolate, which comes in small blocks of chocolate that you melt into hot milk. Perfect when you’re sitting outdoors in the cool weather.

One of the latest trends that I’ve noticed people are really catching up on, is the Ombre (pronounced owm-brey) hair dye job. My sister and cousin (see above photos) have recently done theirs and I must say, they are rocking it!

PS: I noticed it looks best on medium length to long hair, and looks especially good when the hair is wavy. Also, be careful not to go too light on the ends, in comparison to the top of the head, because then it’ll look dip-dyed instead of ombre.

OMBRE NAILS

I MUST try this Ombre manicure, seen at the Parkmoonchoo Fall 2011 show. As I’ve said before, I’m not a big fan of wearing trendy or unusual nail polish, but I’m willing to reconsider it now that I’ve seen this!

Getting this look is really easy:

You'll need three nail polishes: nude, a dark shade, and a clear topcoat. Start by painting your nails with the nude color and let them dry completely. Working one nail at a time, paint a thick layer of clear topcoat over the nude, and while the topcoat is still wet use short strokes to paint the dark color along the tip of the nail. Lay on the dark paint thickly. The color should run into the clear coat. Let nails dry completely and finish with another layer of clear topcoat.

GREEN BAR

A couple of weeks ago, I went to an event called Pretty Little Things. When there, I finally got to see and try Green Bar products, which I had read about and heard of.

Green Bar is a Bahrain based beauty brand created by Reem Al-Khalifa that’s all natural.

Honestly, I usually don’t make that much of an effort to buy natural products – I buy products based on their effectiveness regardless of how “chemical” they are.

However, once I took a look at Reem’s gorgeous skin, I knew I had to have what she’s having! She swears by the tiny tube of Face Elixir (which sold out at the event) and Rose Water as a natural toner.

I got both and I must say they are amazing! The Turkish Rose Water smells like a really strong “Turkish delight” (its scent lingers for hours) and I use it after I wash my face at night. The Face Elixir – which is an oil - smells light and moisturizes my skin without leaving an oily trace.

I am in L-O-V-E with these behind the scenes photos of Alexander McQueen RTW Spring 12 show. The dresses and the whole art direction is insanely good! Sara Burton is a genius (finally hopping onto the bandwagon).

Burton had actually looked to the sea as inspiration. Coral, sea creatures, waves are just some of the inspirations behind her collection.

In my eyes though, I see the models as these fantastical, whimsical creatures from another planet. A planet full of different minerals and rocks and crystals and floating plants that look like lace. Getting carried away…

God, how I love when fashion is as brilliant as this!

It is officially winter in Kuwait. The weather is freezing at night, and in the early mornings, but perfectly chill in the afternoons. CELINE MINI LUGGAGE

This is one of my favorite bags making an appearance with me everywhere. It’s the Celine Mini Luggage in Camel. I find it funny that they chose to name this the “Mini” because it’s not mini AT ALL. It’s more of a medium sized bag.

The leather is so soft and buttery. And best of all, I’ve been looking for this shade of camel/tan for so long, and I’m so happy I found it in this particular style. It’s so classic and is a great staple for the “working woman” who needs to fit 600 items in there. Though I must admit the bag gets quite heavy when loaded with things.

I think a Chambray shirt is a MUST in everyone’s wardrobe. It can be dressed up (with a cute skirt and heels) or dressed down (like in the photo above) and is such a classic yet flattering item of clothing.

MARNI!!

I am SOOOO excited about this! As you may, or may not have noticed, I am a huuuuge Marni fanatic. It is my favorite ready to wear brand because of its contemporary yet very artsy and unique look.

I would happily shop the whole collection if I had thousands of gold bars in my bank account, but alas I have to resort to a few items each season. I don’t give away any of my Marni pieces - because I collect them - and because of their great quality, I still wear items that are 3 or 4 years old.

I just said today on Twitter that after going through the mob at the Versace for H&M event, I was thinking about which brands I would be willing to brave a crowd for, and the only name that popped up in my head is Marni.

The collection will be hitting stores worldwide on March 8.

These images show you that you don’t have to spend an insane amount of money to look super stylish. H&M has been styling their lookbooks in such a chic upscale way, that you can easily mistake it for the big fashion houses.

My colleague Fouz and I were interviewed last week about the upcoming launch of our print magazine Khaleejesque for a segment in a popular local TV show on Al Watan TV called Banat oo Bas (literal translation: Girls Only).

The host, Hessa, was such a sweetheart. Don’t ask me what being in front of the camera is like – I was a nervous wreck when I first got there! Thank God it wasn’t live!

After we were done, I forced Fouz and my sister (who I like to call “the intern” – she was watching us behind the scenes) to take outfit photos.

So this is a sneak peek of our outfits before the actual interview goes live – don’t know when it will air. Probably sometime in December.

I’m in love with those heels, which I believe are by Pour La Victoire. I made the mistake of not buying an exact same pair by Miu Miu a while ago (and are now sold out – obviously). They are a must have! Neutral, yet the pink tint makes them super feminine.

I would never have thought of pairing a yellow shirt with those pants! But it looks amazing!

TREND: NAIL GLITTER

My cousin showed me her manicure the other day and I was surprised to see that one of her nails was painted with glitter. She said it’s a new thing going on, to paint all the nails one color, but have one (preferably the one before the last) painted with glitter.

I’m very classic when it comes to my nails – I’ve never done anything drastic to them. I like them medium to short, and paint them once in a while in pinks and nudes or darker shades of red in the winter. The most I’ve done was a fluorescent pink and a black one (never again).

It’s so easy to go from day to night with it. During the day, you can sling it over your shoulder, or wear it crosswise if you’re busy running errands. For evenings, you can carry it and let the strap hang down (or remove it – up to you).

The bag is very small but it’s incredible how it can fit so many things (wallet, keys, makeup bag, phone, tissues, sunglasses, and more)! Plus it’s so light.

It came in a number of colors; I loved the black, camel and cobalt blue (which were sold out). Definitely worth the price tag!

COFFEE & MEETINGS

Last Thursday, when most people in the region were enjoying their holiday, my colleagues and I had meetings to go to, and tasks to finish. But because it was a “holiday” for the rest of the country and the weather was gorgeous, I insisted that we do our work outdoors instead of inside the office.

We met some friends who also had to work that day, so we all sat together and enjoyed the cool breeze while chatting over coffee. We ended up having a great time before we had to rush off to a meeting and they had to get back to work.

Can’t complain, it was a fun day after all!

PS. We’re drinking Coffee Bean & Tea Leaf’s Vanilla Latte. My favorite hot coffee drink. Period. It’s the stuff sweet (coffee) dreams are made of!

Tuesday, I spent an amazing time with some of my best friends – who I ADORE – at one of Kuwait’s most popular beach resorts. The weather was wonderful and such a delight to frolic, have a goofy time and take pictures in. There’s something about being by the beach that’s just therapeutic.

During the day, we ate lots of sweets, drank a lot of tea and basically just had an overall good time. Later on, as it got darker, the weather became perfectly chilly (so we could wear our favorite shawls!). We wrapped up the evening by having Italian food for dinner then getting back home to indulge in a good night’s sleep.

A DAY AT THE OFFICE

These were taken on our last day at the office (Thursday) before the week-long holiday. Most of the team had traveled, so it was all play and very little work. Some friends even visited us and played pranks on each other!

Our office is pretty cool. It’s light and bright and airy. We’ve all got personal offices but we like to cram into the open workspace area. It’s more fun! Plus, we’re having so much fun with our “Idea Paint” wall. We’ll do an office tour on our blog one day, hopefully.

A BREAK FROM WORK

On Wednesday, the weather was amazingly gorgeous that my colleagues and I just had to take a break from work and have breakfast at one my favorite eateries that – lucky me – happens to be right by our office. We took advantage of the weather and sat outside. We had Eggs Benedict, Scrambled Eggs and Blueberry Ricotta Pancakes.

Then I harassed them into taking outfit shots for the blog (which many people have been nagging me to do, but I was just too lazy).

Me, above two photos. This bag is making all my other ones jealous because I carry it everywhere! I LOVE IT!

Fajer, my co-worker. She has great casual style. She always looks comfortable yet stylish.

Hadaya, our intern (and my sister). She’s interning at our office and I’m making her work for me, literally (she’s a hard worker though). I don’t think I say this enough, but I love her everyday style.

Fouz, my colleague. Our eye for design is very similar and we both share a love for denim shirts.

How pretty (and very high end) does the H&M Conscious Collection Fall 2011 Lookbook look?

Last Spring, Natasha Poly starred in the ad campaign, and this fall Frida Gustavsson and Caroline Brasch Nielsen model the environmentally friendly collection.

I’m loving the lace-like cutout dress and skirts and the beautiful flower print dresses (and matching flower print platforms)!

The stunning Sophie Vlaming looks sleek and styled in Marie Claire Italia’s May 2011 issue. Photographed by Taki Bibelas and styled by fashion editor Laura Seganti, Sophie is dressed in the SS11 runway’s biggest trends and “it” items. I’m L-O-V-I-N-G the shoes and lusting over that white lace/dantelle look!

I love how she’s photographed through the windshield, creating a dreamy effect, and with intentionally added glares emanating from the car’s windows. Speaking of glares, isn’t the model’s stare just hypnotizing? Gorgeous eyes!

THE FLAVOUR THESAURUS

The Flavour Thesaurus by Niki Segnit is basically a thesaurus (it follows the form of Roget’s College Thesaurus) about food flavors. It describes and suggests what flavors go together, and what pairings work best – from classic pairings to unusual ones.

From the reviews I’ve read, it looks like it’s quite interesting and very useful – and can actually inspire you to use leftover foods in unusual yet tasty combinations.

It lists 99 popular ingredients, and suggests both classic and lesser known flavor parings for each ingredient. The book is organized into 16 flavor themes and has 200 recipes, and 980 flavor entries in total.

You can find classic pairings like cucumber & dill; contemporary ones like chocolate & chili, and unusual ones like blueberry & mushroom!

DIY: DIP DYE VASES

When I came across this easy DIY project, I knew I had to share it with you guys. This is an easy and inexpensive way to add color and décor to your rooms (or table settings).

All you’ll need are paper cups, and store-bought dye to make these beautiful Dip Dye Vases. The ones used in the project were made from natural plant materials (bonus!) like beets and dahlias.

You can use any assortment of flowers to fill the cups with. I like how they look rustic and organic. Just remember to weigh down the paper cups with pebbles or stones because they’re so light!

HAPPY BIRTHDAY ALYA!

Once again, I have reached the point of no return. The day that marks the blessed occasion of my birth. I would be happier, if I was getting younger (like Benjamin Button), but alas that is not the case.

All jokes aside, I thought I would be devastated this year, since I’m officially not in my early twenties anymore (nor am I in my mid twenties). But it’s actually not so bad! I’ve had two surprise pre-birthdays so far, I took a dress to my seamstress because I dropped a size (wohooow!) and I looked in the mirror today and realized I don’t look a day older than I did two years ago (bonus)!

This past year, I’ve been through ups and downs. I lost my beloved grandmother, I turned a hobby into a career, I’ve been stressed and I’ve been blessed, but I’m still standing!

How was your week, folks? The weather is getting beautiful over here, and I’m trying to spend every evening outdoors: your home’s terrace, cafes, gardens, etc..

STEVE JOBS (1955-2011)

I’m not an Apple fanatic. The only Apple products I own and use are my 2006 iPod Nano, and my iPad 2 which I got earlier this year. I work in media and design and everyone literally gasps when they see that I do all my work on a Sony Vaio (which I am very content with thankyouverymuch).

That being said though, one cannot deny the HUGE impact Steve Jobs had on science and technology. Not only was he an innovator who changed the world as we know it, but he was also known as a humble human being and an extremely hard worker. If we all had the same work ethic that Jobs had, the world would be a much more productive place.

May he rest in peace.

My Khaleejesque colleagues and I were invited to a private viewing event for Moda Operandi at the Presidential Suite at Missoni Hotel on Monday September 19th.

Moda Operandi is an online members-only, luxury fashion retailer founded by Áslaug Magnúsdóttir, former Head of Merchandising at Gilt.com, and Lauren Santo Domingo, Contributing Editor for Vogue US.

The site allows members to pre-order items (ready-to-wear, accessories, jewelry, shoes, bags) straight from the runway a mere hours after the show!

At the event, we were served a Missoni color palette of elegant hors d’oeuvres and a dinner buffet at the terrace.

Each guest was given a $250 gift voucher to purchase from the site and before we left, a raffle was held and the MO ladies pulled out 3 random numbers and the winners won tickets to New York Fashion Week February 2012!
