WHAT I WORE TODAY

What I Wore Today 5

When I was in high school, I used to doodle a lot. I even did it in college, but not as much as high school since the atmosphere was more serious. Anyway, some of my friends were great “doodlers” so we practiced a lot during class until we got our own “style”. We drew everything from students and teachers to imaginary characters and creatures.

The point of this little story is that I wish I never stopped! Otherwise I would have submitted my illustrations to the super fabulous Flickr group What I Wore Today. Members upload illustrations of what they wore that day. Each person has their own unique style of drawing, not to mention dressing. And many of them have really funny captions too!

I wish I could show you all of them! They are amaaazing. Seriously, go and browse them as soon as you can.

(The pic above looks strangely like me - always struggling with many bags!)

CLINIQUE HIGH DEFINITION LASHES MASCARA

                      Clinique High Definition Lashes Mascara

Meet Clinique High Definition Lashes Brush Then Comb Mascara. Its 'The One'. I found it last year after reading about it in a magazine. It met all my requirements. It thickened, darkened, and lengthened my lashes. Absolutely no clumps whatsoever, no smudging, and no flaking. When you touch your lashes after applying the mascara, they feel silky and natural, like you haven't applied anything at all.

The wand has two sides: a brush and a comb. The brush side coats the lashes with color, and the comb is to separate the lashes. Personally, I don't think the comb is needed because the mascara never clumps anyway. It's that good.

This mascara is NOT for those who are going for a fake lash look, or an eyelash extension look, or a bird feather look. This is for people who want natural looking, but beautiful, thick eyelashes. Even men can wear it. Seriously! You can wear this mascara everyday and everywhere and no one will be the wiser. Well, now they might..

Can you believe these are paintings and not photographs??? Amazing!

Victoria Reichelt’s paintings are unbelievably realistic. It’s tough to tell if they’re photographs or not. My favorites are the bookshelves she paints. Visit her site to see more of her work.

Z SPOKE BY ZAC POSEN

Z SpokeZ Spoke 2

Zac Posen launched a new and affordable clothing line last month, called Z Spoke. The line is sold exclusively at Saks Fifth Avenue and currently offers spring and summer looks.

Instead of the ultra glam look that we’re used to expecting from Posen, this line focuses more on separates such as soft knits, skirts, cotton shirts and blazers. The designs are clean cut, feminine but slightly preppy. I think it’s something Blair Waldorf would love to have in her closet.

When it comes to prices, even though they’re ‘affordable’, they’re not cheap. They’re still much more affordable than the Zac Posen line. Prices start at $78.00, but most of the pieces are more than $200, and some are over $400.

These looks were my favorite. I like the designs but I’m not head over heels in love with them. The prices  It reminds me more of Marc Jacobs than Zac Posen. Don’t you think?

ALICE IN WONDERLAND

Alice in Wonderland

When I first heard Alice in Wonderland was going to be turned into a movie, I expected a slightly Disney-ish Alice in Wonderland. When I found out Tim Burton was going to direct it, I knew it wasn’t going to be the “Alice” I was expecting. I knew it was going to be darker and with a twist.

As you can imagine, my expectations were very high. But then some of my friends saw it and told me to lower my expectations, which kind of depressed me. I’m so glad I did though, because I went to the movie without any expectations, and came out pleasantly surprised. In this version, Alice (Mia Wasikowska) is 19 years old, and runs after the rabbit with the ticking clock, and inevitably falls down a rabbit hole landing into Wonderland. The twist is that she doesn’t remember that she had visited Wonderland 13 years before. The movie has all the cast of characters, the Cheshire Cat, the hookah-smoking Caterpillar, the Mad Hatter (Johnny Depp) and so much more. She realizes that she was brought to Wonderland (renamed Underland) to help bring back the White Queen (Anne Hathaway) to take over the throne, which is currently ruled by the evil Red Queen (Helena Bonham Carter).

The film had a lot of Tim Burton touches, it was more serious than the animated one, but it was less dark than I would have liked it to be. We watched it in IMAX 3D and the effects were stunning. The design and animation was purely wonderful to look at. As for the acting, Mia is a superb Alice, Depp is a fantastic Mad Hatter, and Helena Bonham Carter an awesome and hilarious Red Queen. Anne Hathaway was an “okay” White Queen to say the least.

I’m giving it a 4.5 out of 5 because a) I liked it a lot b) I deducted half a point because it was slightly less adult than I wanted it to be. I would say that it is family friendly, but not child friendly.

Rating 4 and half

82nd ACADEMY AWARDS 2010

The annual Academy Awards ceremony, aka the Oscars, took place on Sunday, March 7th 2010. The show was hosted by Alec Baldwin and Steve Martin. The winners were sort of expected, if you’ve seen the Golden Globes, they were a good indication of what was to come. But still, I always get goose bumps before they announce the winner. And I love watching acceptance speeches too.

Nevertheless, for me, a big part of the Oscar anticipation, is getting to see the red carpet arrivals. Who’s wearing what, who looks good, etc, etc. This year’s red carpet has not failed me, thank goodness!

The gowns, oh the gowns! Finally! Gowns that turn heads, gowns that dazzle, gowns that shimmer, gowns that put the glam in GLAMOROUS. Many actresses went for choices that were not typical red carpet or Oscar-style designers. Instead of the more typical red carpet designers that such as Dior and Vera Wang, the ladies chose more contemporary designers such as  Donna Karan, Prada and Dries van Noten. It was a wonderful change from the more subtle gowns at the Golden Globes and the SAGs.

And now without further ado, the dresses..

Amanda SeyfriedAnna Kendrick

    4 Star        4 Star

Amanda Seyfried in Armani Prive – From the head up, Amanda looked divine, but I wasn’t so sure about the dress. It’s a sculptured silk gown, but the material looks so much like bubble-wrap doesn’t it??

Anna Kendrick in Elie Saab Couture – Anna’s dress is so soft and feminine and romantic. It was a great choice for a nominee. The pink was just the right shade, and the drapings were lovely.

Cameron DiazCarey Mulligan

 5 Star   5 Star

Cameron Diaz in Oscar de la Renta – Fabulous! Gorgeous! Beautiful! I loved this. It’s one of my favorite Cameron looks ever. The dress had an amazing shimmery feel. And er hair and makeup? Simply beautiful.

Carey Mulligan in Prada – As much as I love classic gowns, I’m also drawn to gowns that are out of the norm. I love this, and since I’m a self-professed foodie, I’m even more drawn to the embellishments. They were composed of crystal flowers, small charms, and tiny forks and knives! The long shoulder length earrings are darling with her short pixie haircut too.

Charlize TheronDemi Moore

    4 Star                  2 Star

Charlize Theron in a Dior Haute Couture – I like the dress as a whole, but I’m not so sure when it comes to the draping at the chest. It’s supposed to look like two roses, but it sort of looks like there are two mittens holding her chest! I did like the color though.

Demi Moore in Atelier Versace. – Versace can be so repetitive in their designs, which is why this dress didn’t capture my attention. I like ruffles, but they didn’t go so well with the two-tone fabric in this dress.

Diane KrugerElizabeth Banks

              2 Star                    4 Star

Diane Kruger in Chanel Haute Couture – While Diane is usually a red carpet favorite of mine, this time her dress was awful in my opinion. I know she’s one of Karl Lagerfeld’s favorite ladies to dress, but this doesn’t mean she should succumb to any of his designs.

Elizabeth Banks in Atelier Versace – I liked her gown especially since it has some layers (which is usually a good thing). The color wasn’t wow, but it was nice.

Gabourey SidibeHelen Mirren

            3 Star                4 Star

Gabourey Sidibe in Marchesa – She loves bright colors doesn’t she? Which is a good thing if you want to stand out in a crowd. This shade of blue is one of my favorites, and I really like the appliques or embroidery too.

Helen Mirren in Badgley Mischka – Please God, let me be as beautiful as Helen Mirren when I’m her age! Love her dress too.

Jennifer LopezJulianne Moore

         3 Star                      3 Star

Jennifer Lopez in Armani Prive I liked her dress, but not her hair. It looked like it was messed up. Not in a chic and messy updo, but more like a “need more hairspray” updo. I believe her dress uses the same material as Amanda Seyfried’s, but in a different color.  Her dress is the nicer version of Amanda’s though. I really like the sculpted draping on the hips. Beautiful.

Julianne Moore in Calving Klein Collection – I don’t know what to say. It was so blah.

Kate WinsletKristen Stewart

               2 Star                  5 Star

Kate Winslet in Yves Saint Laurent – I’m not a fan of bustier gowns, but this one wasn’t so bad. Actually it is. I really wish Kate would change up her style because she’s been sticking to so many similar styles lately.

Kristen Stewart in Monique Lhuillier – Monique is becoming one of my favorite designers ever. She gets extra points for making Kristen look this good! The dress is one of the few dark ones that were worn that day and it looked great.

Maggie GyllenhaalMariska Hargitay

    4 Star         4 Star

Maggie Gyllenhaal  in Dries Van Noten – This year, as well as last year, Maggie has been looking stunning on the red carpets. Either her stylist is a really good one, or she’s really matured in her fashion choices. This is definitely not a typical red carpet dress, especially for the Oscars, but I’m so attracted to it.

Mariska Hargitay in Vera Wang – I really like navy shades, and this gown is a nice example of those dresses.

Meryl StreepMichelle Pfeiffer

    4 Star                      2 Star

Meryl Streep in Chris March – Meryl looked really beautiful. This white dress is so flattering on her, and the draping is so elegant.

Michelle Pfeiffer in Carolina Herrera – Michelle could have looked so much better, since the dress is less than average. The only thing pulling it off is that she is a gorgeous woman. The dress, however, is not.

Miley CyrusNicole Richie

 5 Star      4 Star

Miley Cyrus  in Jenny Packham – I am in love with this dress. Even though Miley’s poses annoy me, I still love most of the dresses she wears on the red carpet. The fit of this dress is excellent, and the bodice is perfect and enhances the bottom beaded part.

Nicole Richie in Reem Acra – Nicole wants to reinforce the image that she’s into vintage. The sequin gown looks like it was made in the 70’s, but it’s also really appropriate during this time as well.

Penelope CruzQueen Latifah

                   2 Star                     4 Star

Penelope Cruz in Donna Karan – The custom made dress is not as flattering as it should be. Penelope always pulls out all the stops for the Oscars. This year not so much though. I was so disappointed.

Queen Latifah in Badgley Mischka Couture – She looked amaaazing! The dress was fitted to perfection, and the color was gorgeous on her. The embellishments created a great silhouette for her body.

Rachel McAdamsSandra Bullock

            3 Star           5 Star

Rachel McAdams in Elie Saab Haute Couture – There is a very fine line between glamorous and not-so-glamorous when it comes to prints on evening gowns. This is a case of the no-so-glam, unfortunately.

Sandra Bullock in Marchesa – Let me just say that first, this gown looks much better live than it does in pictures. The metallic fabric and the lace are beautiful together. Her hair was perfect too. Second, I love Sandra!! I can’t say this enough, but I feel like we’re buddies even though we’ve never met. I don’t know, but she seems so loveable and down to earth. I’m so happy she won!!

Sarah Jessica ParkerSigourney Weaver

          3 Star                  3 Star

Sarah Jessica Parker in Chanel Couture – I like the yellow shade of the dress, and the style as well. But.. what is up with that hair?? Why does SJP always go for big huge updos? She’s so tiny, and they make her head look like an alien’s. Harsh, but true.

Sigourney Weaver in Lanvin – This is a nice choice for Sigourney. I think she has a great body and could wear other more flattering dresses.

Tina FeyVera Farmiga

         3 Star              4 Star

Tina Fey in Michael Kors – *Sigh*.. I know that Tina tries to make a good choice when it comes to dressing for special events, but she needs a new stylist. This dress is not as bad as ones she’s worn before, but she could do better.

Vera Farmiga in Marchesa – The ruffled fuchsia gown is absolutely gorgeous. I believe it would have looked more gorgeous on someone taller, but we can’t blame her for that.

Zoe KravitzZoe Saldana

        3 Star              5 Star

Zoe Kravitz – For someone attending as a guest, this is a nice choice for Zoe. She’s also young and it’s nice that she went for something not so serious.

Zoe Saldana in Givenchy Haute Couture – I can imagine a lot of people that won’t like this dress, but I’m so drawn to it and to it’s original design that I can’t help but love it. The purple ombre design is pure gorgeousness, and the gold bodice is a strange but lovely match to the skirt.
