Yes, I know, this post is a few days late, but I was really busy this week. Please forgive me. Better late than never right? I had to post this before the Grammy red carpet coverage. Anyways…
The 16th Annual Screen Actors Guild Awards ceremony was held at the Los Angeles Shrine Exposition Center on Saturday, January 23, 2010. The event honors actors and actresses (no directors, just actors) in the film and television industry. Personally, even though the SAG Awards are just as important to an actor, as any other award, I always feel like they’re overshadowed by the Golden Globes which precede them in date. The recipients of the awards are also very similar, though it’s not really their fault is it?
Nevertheless, celebrities dazzled, the gowns were beautiful and at least it wasn’t raining (like on the day of the Globes)! The ladies looked gorgeous, and that’s what it’s all about isn’t it? Well, that and the actual awards..
Anna Kendrick in Alberta Ferretti – A beautiful, beautiful color. Simple design, pretty ruffles, and a good choice to wear after the great dress at she wore at the Globes.
Anna Paquin in Alexander McQueen – While I didn't hate this dress, I didn't quite like it either. Maybe because it looked more appropriate for a less formal occasion. Awards ceremonies in Hollywood, unless they're the MTV Awards or Nickelodeon's, should look more prim and dressy.
Carey Mulligan in Lanvin – Although she looks like a teenage cutie, Carey's dress here is very mature. I liked it, but felt that the material was a bit stiff and had too much draping which made it look creased.
Cheryl Hines – Pretty aqua color, elegant design and a fitting hairstyle. I love the cut of this dress, it looks great on women of all ages.
Christina Applegate in Roberto Cavalli – The shade of this icy blue dress is lovely, especially on Christina. I think shades of blue suit her well, which is why she’s been wearing a number of dresses in blue this past year. The back of this dress is even lovelier. It has a low “V” cut back with detailing and a long train.
Christina Hendricks in Carolina Herrera – Oh, Christina! What can I say? She is an stunning example of a curvy woman. And those are indeed beautiful curves, if I do say so myself. She also chooses the best styles for her body. Simple, chic and highlights her assets - with perfect hair and makeup to top it off.
Diane Kruger in Jason Wu – everyone's talking about how it resembles Michelle Williams' 2006 Oscar dress. I agree, but it's still a winner in my eyes.
Dianna Agron – This is a lovely choice as a successor after her Golden Globes gown. This time Dianna went with an old Hollywood glamor look, with a dark red lipstick and long thick lashes.
Drew Barrymore in Monique Lhuillier – I absolutely LOVE this dress. The tiers with the embroidery at the bottom. The way it moved when she walked. The color. Everything about it was beautiful. I wish she had less poufy hair and a darker shade of lipstick. It would have made all the difference.
Gabourey Sidibe in Pamella Roland – I didn’t like this dress as much as I liked her in the green one she wore for the Globes. It was a bit too bright, with no details to make it special.
Holly Hunter – The dazzling earrings make up for the uncomplicated design. Definitely a winning look.
Jane Krakowski in Alberta Ferretti – I liked Jane’s hair and makeup. It was very retro. However, the dress was too “white” for her pale skin, and the gown was sort of ill-fitted - like it was made from a satin bed sheet.
Jenna Fisher – She looks gorgeous in this gown. She's come a long way from her choices in the past. This shade of blue is a big hit this season. A lot of people are wearing it, especially in evening dresses.
Jennifer Carpenter in Paule Ka – A great dress that is totally in fashion. Puffy shoulders, short and fitted. Something Kim Kardashian would wear. I didn’t like the hair though, since it elongated her face which is already long.
Jessalyn Gilsig – I don’t think there is a shade of purple that I don’t like. I like them a lot on evening dresses, because they immediately highlight the person, making them standout between a sea of black. This dress is no exception. Amazing.
Joan Allen – I did not like this look at all. Although Joan’s makeup and hair was very pretty, her dress and that necklace ruined it! I understand she was going for the bohemian look, but this just wasn’t right for the occasion at all. Neither the necklace nor the dress.
Julia Louis-Dreyfus – Julia is always a hit or miss on the red carpet. Sometimes she looks like she’s trying too hard and it shows. Case in point: this dress. She’s trying to look sexy (the body hugging dress), but the material is sort of cheap.
Juliana Margulies in Narciso Rodriguez – This is the only time I've seen velvet done right. It doesn't look stuffy or old or even worse, like furniture. Brilliantly done! Especially that stunning midnight blue color.
Julie Benz – Another beautiful shade of purple. The ruffles that extend from the chest downwards add a touch of frill to the dress.
Kate Hudson in Emilio Pucci – This was my favorite dress of the whole evening! Kate looked stunning and glowing. Her makeup was amazing, so light but so sultry. The dress hugged the body perfectly, but wasn’t clingy. And the back was so beautiful! It was cut really low, and had a chain dangling from it. Superb.
Katrina Bowden – Cute, but it’s a bit “been there, done that”. We’ve seen so many white dresses with black bows haven’t we? I don’t know, it just doesn’t attract me anymore. Nevertheless, she still looks good in it.
Kyra Sedgwick in Vera Wang – I think this dress would look better if the grey sash went just across the waist instead of both diagonal across the torso and around the waist.
Lea Michele in Malandrino – If you remember her Golden Globes dress from last week, you’ll realize this is a complete turnaround. Her dress wasn’t bad, but it wasn’t a knockout. This one is amazing on her. It complements her tone, her hair, her eyes. Success.
Mariana Klaveno in Ina Soltani – Nice dress. Cute ruffles. The shade complements her milky skin tone and dark hair. Like a modern Snow White.
Marion Cotillard in Elie Saab Haute Couture – I don't know if anyone can pull off a flapper-style dress more than a French woman can. I feel like I'm biased when it comes to Marion. I think everything she does is amazing. Some people didn't like it, but I think it's beautiful.
Mariska Hargitay – I didn’t like this dress much. It felt a bit like a bridesmaid dress, except it had a longer train. Her hair did nothing to improve the look either – it was too flat.
Meryl Streep in Balenciaga – I don't know why the "Fashion Police" kept complaining about this dress. I thought she looked amazing! This dress was short on the runway, and they lengthened it for her which is more age-appropriate.
Michelle Monaghan in Calvin Klein – I like one shoulder gowns to be exactly that: one shouldered. Not sleeveless and long sleeve. Not short sleeve and long sleeve. It's one shoulder, two shoulders, or none. Nothing half-way.
Patricia Arquette – She’s never done well on the red carpet, in my opinion. This look isn’t as bad as the others she’s done before. Her dress is also a trend this season, with all the sequins and shine.
Paula Patton in J. Mendel – Paula is usually a stunner on the red carpet, but this time I’m afraid she just stunned people in a negative way. The dress resembled a wedding dress because it had many layers. It also made her look heavier on top. I didn’t like her hair either.
Penelope Cruz in L'Wren Scott – Penelope has a formula when it comes to the red carpet. If it's not big and glamorous, it's going to be black and simple. Although she is perfect in this whole look, she's still lacking more fabulousness.
Rutina Wesley – Please forgive me if I’m offending anyone, but I am against dreadlocks or braids at any formal event. The hair completely downgraded the whole look. It’s not a bad dress, but I just can’t see it by itself.
Sandra Bullock in Alexander McQueen – One of my favorite actresses in the world, Sandra rocked this McQueen outfit. It is so elegant but with a touch of whimsy at the collar. Again, this bold blue color, was a favorite at the SAGs and it transformed the dress.
Stana Katic – Apparently, the photographers thought this was Mischa Barton! Poor Stana, I wouldn't want to walk a red carpet and be mistaken for someone else! Well, at least she looked good doing so. Mischa should be flattered they chose this girl as a look-alike!
Tina Fey in Ferragamo – After her previous miss with her Golden Globes dress, Tina chose a more subtle yet head-turning design for the SAGS. Definitely a great choice. Simple, elegant but very feminine.
Toni Collette in Rafael Cennamo – Even though this dress looks summery, I still loved it. Toni also looks glowing and tanned. I sort of felt like it was June and not January!
